At Kulap Primary School, assessment is central to understanding student growth and guiding effective teaching. We use pre-tests and post-tests, including Essential Assessment and Progressive Achievement Tests (PAT), to measure learning progress and inform instruction. These assessments help identify prior knowledge, track development, and celebrate achievement.
Our approach blends formative and summative assessments to provide a comprehensive picture of student learning. Formative assessments — such as teacher observations, peer feedback, and self-assessment — help us monitor progress and adapt teaching in real time. Summative assessments, including projects, presentations, and standardised tests, provide opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery of key concepts and skills.
Teachers collaborate regularly in professional learning communities to analyse assessment data, share insights, and refine practice. We also keep families informed through regular communication and detailed semester reports, ensuring strong partnerships that support every learner.
Reporting
We provide detailed student reports at the end of each semester, outlining achievement across the eight domains of the Victorian Curriculum. Reports assess student progress against VELS levels and use the A–E grading scale for clarity. Comments highlight individual strengths, work habits, and areas for growth, giving parents a clear understanding of their child’s academic and personal development.
This process reflects our belief that assessment should not only measure achievement but also inspire growth and self-confidence.
