Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP)
The Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) is a Department of Education enrichment program for high-ability students in Victorian government schools.
VHAP provides selected students in Years 5 and 6 with the opportunity to participate in a 10-week online extension course in either English or Mathematics.
The program is delivered by Virtual School Victoria during school hours, with students joining a weekly online lesson alongside other high-ability students from across the state.
How students are selected
Students are identified and invited to participate by the Department of Education using:
- NAPLAN data
- Teacher judgement
What students experience
During the program, students:
- Participate in one online lesson per week over 10 weeks.
- Work on challenging, project-based tasks.
- Develop higher-order thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.
- Learn alongside like-ability peers from other schools.
At the end of the course, students take part in a local masterclass with other participants to consolidate their learning.
VHAP is an enrichment program, designed to provide additional challenge and engagement, rather than to accelerate students through the curriculum.
