Zones of Regulation

At Kulap Primary school, we use the Zones of Regulation program to help students develop their understanding of emotions and build strategies for self-regulation. This framework supports children in recognising their feelings, identifying what “zone” they are in, and choosing appropriate tools or actions to manage their emotions and behaviour. The four colour-coded zones — Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red — represent different levels of alertness and emotions, from calm and focused to excited or upset. Teachers explicitly teach these concepts through discussions, stories, and visual aids, helping students build emotional vocabulary and resilience. The program aligns with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 under the Personal and Social Capability and Health and Physical Education areas, supporting students to understand themselves and others, make positive choices, and create a respectful and supportive learning environment.
